Some famous battles the navy was involved was the Civil War, and the Revolutionary War, and the Cold War. in the 1880's, the first steel hulled warships were made, making the navy that much more powerful. They now called the navy, "The new steel navy". in 1907, the Navy's battleships started the Great White Fleet, where all the ships circumnavigated the world. by the year 1943, the Navy was bigger than any other combat section in the World War II. The Navy also has strong relationships with the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Marines. In 2011, the Navy has 285 ships, and about 50,000 aircrafts.

The United States Marine Corps (USMC), was formed to provide protection of the seas. The Marines most famous battle, was called the Barbary War which happened in 1801 and lasted until 1805. They battled a group called the Barbary Pirates. The Famous leaders at the time were William Eaton and Presley O' Bannon. They were leading 8 marines, and a whopping 500 Mercenaries. This was just to capture Tripoli, which is the Capital and also the largest city of Libya. The Marines also fought in the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the Seminole Wars of 1835, and played a big role in the Civil War in 1861.

Aircraft played a decent role in the Gulf War that started in 1991, they were also involved in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cold War . There is a lot of different planes and other aircraft that is used today. Some of the famous ones, are the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, SR-71 Blackbird, and the F-117 Nighthawk. In 1947, a man by the name of Chuck Yeager, who was the Captain of the Air Force, broke the sound barrier in the X-1 aircraft that was powered by a rocket. When World War II was going on, 68,000 people that were controlling aircraft lost their lives in the process of winning this huge war. That's just proof that aircraft can be crucial in the battles that matter.
